Why are NVME or Gen3x4 M.2 2280 SSD getting so popular?

SSD have gone through a transition in the last 5 years at a very rapid pace. We started with SATA
2 SSD which offered 2x the speed of a HDD about 5 years back. After SATA 2 we had SATA 3 SSD
about 3 years back which offer a maximum of 560 MB/s read 520 MB/s. In the initial years we had
controller failures and firmware glitches which limited the usage of SSD. Over the last couple of
years with SSD controllers maturing and firmwares getting stable the speeds have been climbing.
The failure rate of SSD is recently less than even .1 percent.

We all know SATA 3 has a limitation of 600 MB/s and cannot give higher bandwidth to data. With
this limitation manufacturers have moved the SSD from SATA 3 to the PCIe bus. The advantage of
the using the PCIe bus is that it can offer a bandwidth of upto 3200 MB/ vs SATA speeds of 600
MB/s. So there is clear advantage of bandwidth which gives a PCIe based SSD 5x more bandwidth
than a SATA ssd. While a HDD offered 100 MB/s , we had SATA based SSD which were 5x faster
550 MB/s, now we have PCIe based SSD which is 5x faster. All this means faster speeds of data
being processed, which makes your pc boot faster , open applications much faster and read and
write large files at blazing speeds. In a simple analogy how we have a 2 line highway which can
represent a SATA 2 SSD , a 4 lane highway which can represent a SATA 3 SSD and then a 16 lane
highway which represents NVMe or Gen3x4 PCIe M.2 SSD. It is obvious that more number of
cars can pass through a 16 lane highway which in turn means you can have more data throughput

There are various manufactures now showing their NVMe Gen3x4 M.2 SSDs. Samsung being the
leader in this space has introduced the SM 951 M.2 NVMe Gen3X4 PCIe SSd with read speeds of
upto 2150 MB/s. These are available ins 128GB / 256GB and 512GB capacities. Adata has
introduced their Latest offering of PCIe M.2 Gen3x4 based ssd XPG SX8000 series 128GB /
256GB / 512GB / 1TB capacities. Plextor also has their offering in the M8Pe(g) series in 128GB /
256GB / 512GB / 1TB.

Applications suited for same a normal desktop usage , Animation , gaming , Esport , Cadcam ,
Video editing applications such as Photoshop , 3DMax , Nuke , Maya. Sql Database , Hadoop,
Large Excel files Etc.
